With timely hitting and a stellar performance from a pitching staff that surrendered just four hits, the Tomateros de Culiacán Baseball Club defeated the Venados de Mazatlán 6-2 in their second matchup of the 2026 Copa Gobernadora.
The Guinda squad drew first blood in the second inning when Fernando Villegas launched a solo home run to right field to put Culiacán ahead.
In the fifth frame, the Culichi offense expanded its lead with a three-run rally. Román Alí Solís delivered a clutch double to score Ichiro Cano and Rosman Verdugo, while JP Martínez capped off the inning with an RBI single to bring Alí Solís home, making it 4-0.
Lorenzo Bundy's men kept the pressure on in the sixth, adding two more runs courtesy of a two-RBI single from Édgar Robles to momentarily push the advantage to 6-0.
From the mound, the Guinda pitching staff proved dominant, combining to allow just four hits while striking out 13 batters.
Left-handed starter Édgar Torres led the way on the bump with three scoreless innings, giving up only two hits while striking out four. The bullpen was equally commanding with solid relief work from Sasagi Sánchez, David Gutiérrez, Martín Urías, Robert Gsellman, and Alejandro Sauceda. Finally, Miguel Vázquez and Rafael Nava closed out the game in the ninth.
Tomateros de Culiacán will conclude their participation in the 2026 Copa Gobernadora this Friday when they take on the Cañeros de Los Mochis at 8:00 PM at Estadio Alberto Vega Chávez. Right-hander Édgar Arredondo is scheduled to take the mound for Culiacán.
